There's always a lot going on when it comes to talking about climate change. The Bad Astronomer has been writing a lot on how some politicians in the US refuse to accept that global warming is happening.
Here in Oz, I haven't seen that much in the way of climate denial. Instead, there are TV ads on quite often about saving power, reducing our greenhouse emissions and saving water. I don't know why there is the seeming difference in attitude, but the US politicians do appear to be quite silly to me.
Honestly, it doesn't matter if you "believe" in global warming or not. Reducing our carbon dioxide emissions and saving water are fantastic things to do just in general. People shouldn't only start saving water when there's a drought, they should do it all the time. It's the same with recycling, or reducing the amount of waste in your household. They are all good things to do just to help prevent the problem arising in the future. If you don't "believe" in climate change, who cares? But we all still live here, we can't just head off to Mars (yet) to get away from the problem.
It can't hurt to pollute less, or to be mindful or our usage of resources. These people in America seem to me like they just argue with any idea that comes along that has anything to do with science. I could go into all the things that I assume they enjoy, like television, that came about from science, but it wouldn't make a difference.
It doesn't matter whether the problems exist now. The thing is, if we keep on not caring, the problems will exist later. Maybe not in your lifetime, but your children's and grandchildren's. It doesn't hurt to do a little bit of good for the planet, but it could help a lot.
